Dr. Tessler received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1967. He completed a surgical internship at Detroit's Harper Hospital and interrupted a surgical residency there to serve in the U.S. Army as an orthopedic surgeon during the Vietnam war in 1969 and 1970.

Dr. Tessler completed his Dermatology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in 1974. He is board certified in dermatology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.
