Dr. Barrera is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He has been in private practice as a plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas since 1985 and has a unique practice now devoted exclusively to follicular unit hair transplantation and aesthetic plastic surgery.

He is very hands on and personally makes all graft incisions and places each and every follicular unit graft. He has also written a book and multiple textbook chapters on the latest hair transplantation techniques and the restoration hair lost due to birth defects, burns or after burn injuries or tumor removals.

He is a past president of the Houston Society of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Barrera graduated from medical school in Monterrey, Mexico in 1978, after which he did his General Surgery residency at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas (1978-1980)

Subsequently did a complete residency in Otolaryingology –Head & Neck Surgery at the Harvard Medical School Program in Boston Massachussetts (Massachusetts General Hospital, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary) 1980-1983.

From 1983 to 1985 he did his Plastic Surgery Residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Otolaryngology –Head & Neck Surgery, and is a Member of the Double Boarded Society.
