Measuring the Balding Surface for Hair Transplant Surgery Assessment - 10/20/2009
In my experience, the average patient’s head can be divided into two areas. The frontal 2/3 of the scalp on average measures 100 sq.cm. On average the crown loss is 80 to 100 sq.cm. The area of the crown will vary by how low and wide the crown loss is. On average I would say that to cover the total bald area in most men who are type 6 or 7 on the Norwood scale, I cover an area of 200 sq. cm. Here are few examples of hair transplant patients in which I believe dense packing in the hairline area is appropriate. I consider planting at densities between 40- 60 follicular units per square centimeter (FU/cm2) as dense packing. Why do Some Hair Transplant Surgeons Create Larger Incisions than Others? Aren’t Smaller Blades Better? - 3/1/2009
The answer to your question is that sometimes smaller blades are more optimal, and sometimes not. It depends on many factors. What is more important then the size of the blade is how the follicular unit (FU) fits in the incision. The graft should fit snugly, but not too tight to cause compression. Also, the incision size should be such that the follicular unit grafts can be planted into the skin with as little trauma as possible. The texture and thickness of ones skin and the size of the graft determine what size blade should be used to make the incisions. Is .5 mg of Finasteride as Effective of a Hair Loss Treatment as the 1mg Propecia Pill? - 6/6/2008
The studies on Propecia, (finasteride 1mg pill) for hair loss treatment were done at the 1mg dose so we do not have any good medical studies to suggest the .5mg will or will not work. I always suggest that anyone taking finasteride for the first time do it as suggested: at the 1mg dose and keep constant for 1 year. Then after you and your physician have a good idea of how effective Propecia has been you can start to adjust the dose if need be.
