Dr. Timothy Carman performs large sessions of ultra refined follicular unit transplantation with excellent results
Why Dr. Carman is recommended.
Dr. Carman has a strong background in plastic surgery and trained intensively with Coalition member Dr. Bill Reed during his one year fellowship in hair transplantation. Dr. Reed was very impressed with Dr. Carman's ethics and final results and invited him to join his clinic. Dr. Carman now works with Dr. Reed and his experienced staff performing large sessions of ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation.

Dr. Carman shares Dr. Reed's philosophy of putting the patient’s best interest above technical dogma and his compassion and commitment. Dr. Carman's passion for great work and patients is also evident in his active participation on the Hair Transplant Network discussion forum. Dr. Carman also has a strong interest in painting and sculpting. His eye for design and careful attention to detail is evident in the hairline and crown patterns he creates for his patients.
Using cutting instruments as small as a 20 gauge needle, Dr. Carman creates a combination of tiny sagital (parallel) and coronal (perpendicular) incisions depending on the area of baldness and the position of the native hair. His goal is to mimic the natural angulation and direction of the patient's hair. He believes that in using this approach, he can easily work around existing hair without requiring shaving.
Dr. Carman uses the trichophytic closure technique for all hair transplants he performs and closes the donor area utilizing a single layer running suture. He believes that this not only minimizes tension on the skin, but it provides equal tension along the entire suture line, minimizing scarring. All follicular units are dissected and trimmed under microscopes and carefully placed by Dr. Carman’s experienced staff under his direct supervision.
Dr. Carman is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and is also a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ASHRS).

Are Hair Transplants an Option for Young Men with Advanced Hair Loss? - 7/14/2011
From your photos, I would concur that you appear to be heading toward advanced hair loss as you age. At 21, and with this advanced degree of balding, it is my opinion that you are too young for a hair transplant procedure.

How Can I Minimize Scarring after Hair Transplant Surgery? - 6/28/2011
The reality of scar formation is that it is most dependent on two things which are actually out of your control. The first is how aggressive the hair restoration surgeon is in taking the donor strip. The wider the strip (taller), the more tension on the closure and the greater the chance of scar formation.

Sore, Red Bumps on Scalp After Hair Transplant Surgery - 2/3/2011
Most likely, it is due to either new hairs emerging (which can occur from 3 months to 12 months post-operatively, and usually last no more than 1 week each), or ingrown hairs (same time period, but may last much longer/become chronic).

What are My Options after a Bad Hair Transplant? - 12/23/2010
The work that was done, although certainly not stellar, would appear to fall within the category of “standard of care”, so the “suing” issue I believe may be a waste of time. The overall result wherein the follicular unit grafts are placed

Can Hair Transplantation Give Me Back My Teenage Hairline? - 7/10/2010
Given your age, and your family history of balding, I personally would not perform hair transplant surgery in your case. While you indeed feel that you “won’t care” as it were to “wear a hair system” or you’ll “take your chances” later on down the road, I feel quite strongly that one of my roles as a physician is to first and foremost “do no harm.”

More Hair Transplants After Depleting the Donor Hair Supply? - 11/5/2009
One of the issues to be addressed in the initial hair restoration consult, and, in my honest opinion, the most critical concept, is the surgical plan created by the physician in conjunction with the patients’ age, degree of hair loss, donor supply, scalp laxity, and genetic background (familial history); all in an effort to “predict” the future hair loss pattern for that individual. Ideally...

Are Hair Transplant Megasessions Safe? - 9/28/2009
In general, the maximum amount of donor grafts available in any one hair transplant session is dependent upon three factors: 1) The patient’s hair density in the donor area;
2) The length of the strip removed; and 3) The width of the strip removed. Number one, the patients density (average = 100 FU/cm2), is what it is- this factor is beyond the surgeons/clinics control. If this number is 110 or 120 FU/cm2, the total amount of potential grafts available can dramatically increase...

Hair Loss and Thinning from Crash Diet Weight Loss? - 6/18/2009
What you are describing is classic for symptoms of telogen effluvium - which refers to a temporary hair shedding related to some type of “stressor” - in your case, caloric restriction or “crash diet”. The natural hair growth cycle as it relates to this, and as observed when we perform hair transplants, is that, after the “stressor”, the follicles goes into a resting phase that lasts three months. Also, this “three month window” is also a pertinent time line one sees for...

Can Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Increase Hair Growth from Hair Transplant Surgery? - 3/18/2009
The main use for these agents is in the area where hair flaps are created, which is generally not a feature of most of today’s hair restoration procedures. As from the article cited: “The potential advantages of the use of such substances include prevention of hematoma, reduction in surgical time, elimination of the need for drains, reduction of tension on flaps, and shorter recovery times. These 20 cosmetic surgery cases involving the creation of skin flaps demonstrate that autologous fibrin glue is effective in sealing capillary beds during the surgery and...

Can Topical Fluridil Block DHT and Stop Hair Loss? - 3/7/2009
Without going into too great a detail, topical Fluridil preparation acts topically to inhibit the effects of DHT on the hair follicle. Current studies show that, similar to finasteride, there is an increase in the total percentage of hair in the active (anagen) verses resting (catagen) stage (from 76% to 87% at nine months). I happen to personally know the clinical investigators (Dr. M Sovak, UCSD) and the clinical research facility (UCSD). Their results are clinically significant, and their research work and ethics are highly respected in the scientific research community.

Can a Hair Transplant Be Spotted? - 2/16/2009
In state of the art follicular unit transplantation procedures, even we surgeons can have a hard time differentiating transplanted grafts from native hair. The “tip-off”, in actuality, isn’t really the difference between the actual look of the hair itself, or the base of the shaft, etc; rather it is the “gestalt” or background against which the transplanted graft occurs.

Is Topical Propecia and Effective Hair Loss Treatment? - 2/11/2009
Actually Propecia (finasteride) is not the DHT blocker alluded to in most hair loss discussions. A per Dr. Lindsey, Propecia (finasteride) would not have an effect topically.
There is a hair loss drug currently available for use in Europe which is a topical agent which blocks DHT called Fluridil. It has shown promise, but for me the jury is still out. Another link of well respected journal that published the findings at Dermatologic Surgery can be found...

Does More Than One Hair Transplant Mean Multiple Scars? - 1/8/2009
If the previous donor hair was taken in a much lower position on the scalp than is the usual case (NOT a common occurrence), it may not be prudent to attempt to remove the first donor scar as the re-occurrence rate and/or development of an even wider scar in that area is a very real possibility. In general, amongst experienced hair restoration surgeons who are current in their techniques, there should be...

“Wispy” and Lifeless Hair 5 Months After a Hair Transplant - Is This Normal? - 12/29/2008
Newly transplanted hair typically grows in with less caliber at the start, so remain optimistic and continue to be the ”patient” patient as you have been. 5 months out from hair restoration surgery is definitely too early and yes, you should continue to see increased density with more time.

Why Graft and Hair Counts are Both Important in Hair Restoration Surgery - 8/20/2008
In my opinion, both are relevant. Hair graft counts alone can be misleading, as follows. Say a hair restoration patient has 1000 follicular units available in the donor area. When trimmed to their naturally occurring groupings (true follicular unit grafts of 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and 4’s), they will average 2 hairs per follicular unit. This will yield 2000 hairs as per my example. Now one can cut each and every follicular unit down to one hair grafts, and if a hair restoration physician were to do that, you would have 2000 grafts. This would be labeled as a “2000 graft case”, when, in fact, a surgeon is moving the same amount of hair mass in both instances.
