Dr. Umar is arguably the world’s leading expert on BHT and specializes in hair transplant repair cases. Dr. Umar is very “hands-on” and extracts all FUE and BHT grafts himself. He often assists his certified medical assistant with over 7 years experience with placing grafts into tiny recipient incisions he made himself.
Dr. Umar developed a passion for alternative hair transplant procedures due to a botched 400 graft strip surgery he endured several years ago. His personal dedication has helped motivate him to excel while enduring unfair criticism from some of his BHT competitors.
Dr. Umar recognizes that today’s state of the art follicular unit hair transplant (FUT) procedures are producing world renowned results. However, Dr. Umar believes that his minimally invasive FUE technique provides some distinct advantages including a significant reduction in potential scarring and rapid healing times.
Dr. Umar makes optimal use of scalp donor hair via FUE (follicular unit extraction) before even considering alternative sources. When appropriate, Dr. Umar takes a comprehensive approach by creating a unique blend of scalp, beard, nape (the area where hair starts above the neck) and body hair used as “filler”. He refers to his unique process as the “Umar Procedure” for single follicle extraction and transfer (SFET).
Recognizing that not everyone is suited for BHT, Dr. Umar uses very strict criteria in determining who is an appropriate candidate. In Dr. Umar’s experience, more body hair is required to provide the same amount of coverage as normal scalp hair, due to the long resting phase of body hair.
Using innovative FUE tools he designed himself, Dr. Umar first scores the skin using a 0.9 mm or less punch and then uses a needle to separate the root of the follicle from the surrounding tissue. Dr. Umar believes this process reduces scarring and minimizes the risk of transection that might result if he attempted extend the punch down to the base of the follicle for extraction.
Dr. Umar is an active member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and has given several presentations on his innovative hair transplant technique at annual scientific meetings worldwide. Dr. Umar is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He completed his fellowship training in cosmetic surgery under the direction of the American Academy of Cosmetic surgery.
