Dr. Koray Erdogan has quickly established an excellent reputation amongst his patients and peers for his dedication to providing world class follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation with outstanding results. He has over 12 years of experience and has been performing advanced FUE hair transplant surgery exclusively at his clinic in Istanbul Turkey since 2007. He started perfecting his FUE procedure in 2004.
Currently Dr Erdogan is performing only FUE procedures in ASMED Medical Center in Istanbul, with the assistance of 4 other doctors and 20 nurses. His patients come from all over the world: 90% of them are from Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Sweden, Canada, United States and Australia.
Dr. Koray Erdogan also performs Long Haired FUE. This procedure is much like typical follicular unit extraction however, no shaving is required to the donor or recipient area. This enables patients to appear normal looking immediately after surgery, just with more hair.
The extraction part of the Long Haired FUE procedure is perfromed with special punches patented by Dr. Erdogan. The incisions are created by Saphire Blades in order not to damage the original hair roots and the placement of the grafts are performed using KEEP (Koray Erdogan Embedding Placer) also patented by Dr. Erdogan. Approximately 1000 grafts are harvested and implanted per day up to a maximum of 3000 grafts in 3 consecutive days.
Dr. Erdogan graduated in 1994 at the Hacettepe University (Ankara), Faculty of Medicine, and completed his compulsory medical service in Kastamonu. Afterwards he attended the Faculty of Thoracic Surgery at the Marmara University of Istanbul and worked in a Coronary Intensive Care Unit. He started in the field of hair restoration in 2000, assisting several hair surgeons in their private clinics. In 2001, he opened his own clinic in Istanbul – ASMED – with his first assistant Dilek Cakir.
In 2004, Dr. Erdogan started to perform FUE by combining both strip and FUE techniques. In 2005 he realized that FUE patients had similar results as with strip and were happier because of the minor trauma and the less visible scar with short hair. In 2006 he developed his own FUE tools and method of grafts extraction, named “DES” (also known as ‘SEQUENTIAL TECHNIQUE’, published by FUE Research Committee of International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery in November/December 2013).
Dr. Koray Erdogan and his technique are very popular and sees patients from all over the world, especially from Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Sweden.
Dr. Koray Erdogan has the skill, experience and staff to transplant over 2400 follicular units in a single day and dense pack up to 55 FU/cm2 (follicular units per scquare centimeter) when appropriate for the patient. However, such high densities are rarely required and often unnecessary as higher densities come with a risk of reduced growth. Dr. Erdogan also operates on only one or two patient daily depending on the size of the session.
Dr. Erdogan uses a manual punch crafted by Ellis Instruments ranging from 0.6mm to 0.9mm in size when appropriate for the patient. This enables him to reduce scarring and trauma to th scalp. Dr. Erdogan feels that advantages of manual extraciton include undetectable scarring, high yield and low transection. Manual extraction also allows him to change the direction of the punch if he feels transection may occur.
Dr. Erdogan developed the "one-step" manual extraction technique which he feels provides him with more sensibility and helps to minimize transection. Because the punching and graft removal process occurs simultenously, this technique has the ability to expedite the extraction process while maximizing graft viability. In practice, the one and two step extraction method look very similar in comparison. However, Dr. Erdogan feels that his one step technique makes extraction faster while reducing trauma and transection.
Dr. Koray Erdogan carefully creates all recipient incisions by hand using tiny blades as small as .7mm. Each incision is 0.1mm larger than the size of each graft which he feels enables him to adapt his plan according to graft quality. Dr. Erdogan temporarily stores the harvested follicular units in a hypotonic solution for no more than 3 hours. Each graft is then carefully inserted into the recipient area by his skilled technicians under Dr. Erdogan's direct supervision.

In 2004, Dr. Koray Erdogan attended a hair transplant workshop and saw FUE performed live and then started providing both FUE and FUSS (strip) procedures. Over time, he began to see that FUE patients were happier even with fewer grafts due to minimal trauma and scarring in the donor area. From that time, Dr. Erdogan worked to perfect his technique, yield and overall results.
Dr. Erdogan is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the Turkish Medical Association, the Italian Society for Hair Restoraiton (ISHR) and the European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ESHRS).
