I pretty much starting losing my hair in my early twenties - had a few life events that may have excelerted it but it was MPB for sure. As time went forward I just had to try and accept it, which was tuff to do most of the time. It had a large effect on my life style. Have always thought of doing something about it but never thought it would work for me. So one day about 6 months ago I decided to go and get a consult to see what was out there and how it would fit in with what I would want.

Greetings community. I am a 25 year-old male who has been dealing with the balding process since I was 18. Male pattern baldness is extremely common in my family (father, uncle and grandfather all fully bald in late 20's) and it seemed inevitable that I was on the same path. I began to see my receding hairline take shape in my late teens/early 20's. As I was very self-conscious about this issue I immediately sought products like Rogaine and other herbal pills. When I knew that I could not deal with the oily process of Rogaine I began taking Propecia when I was 20 and I am still using to date. While my receding hairline is deep and noticeable, there is no doubt that the Procecia has slowed this process and also prevented any major thinning behind my hairline. I can honestly say that without starting Propecia at such an early age I would be much worse off that I am today. As I mentioned, this whole process was very sensitive to me, and I began researching hair restoration over 5 years ago. At the time I was still skeptical and unsure if I was ready to take on this procedure at such an early age. I actually sent photos to Dr. Konior’s office when I was 21 and was given immediate feedback. At the time I was informed that my best option was to take some time as I was still very young and it would be beneficial to establish some progress with the Propecia. Over the next few years I used cosmetic products Cuvre and Toppik to conceal my receding hairline. While this was a daily time commitment, I was able to maintain a young and natural look that went pretty much undetectable to close family and friends. I am aware that this cosmetic solution does not work for everyone, but for me it was a tremendous success. I am going to be posting pictures of my receding hairline through my transplant procedure, however I will see if I can post some of my normal pictures in case anyone is curious about the cosmetic look (Along with the transplant procedure, if the cosmetic portion is something that you are curious about, have any questions, or would like to see more pictures, please do not hesitate to email me).

As you read this keep in mind that some was written before, during and after the trip and procedure. It’s long so you might want to skip around if you get bored, but I wanted to share as much as possible.

------------------------Why did I choose to have a transplant?------------------

Short Answer—A desire to have more hair and the security that I found the Doctor to do it the way I wanted it done with a proven track record.

Long Answer—I don’t have insecurity about my lack of hair and in all honesty felt like I pulled the shaved head look off pretty good. I also got compliments once I started letting my hair grow back out for the procedure. But, when I saw picture of myself or looked in the mirror I don’t see myself. I’m sure for most of you that makes sense. I’m young at heart; keep myself in good shape, and love living life. I don’t have a heart wrenching story, a terrible experience, or a turning point situation (not downgrading those who do). I’m a golf playing, beer drinking, sports loving regular Joe that just wants more hair—Plain and Simple. I will also go on record saying that I don’t think it will be life changing. I’m not looking for life changing. I love my life and really don’t want it to change. I do however want to live this life with a few more hairs on my head.

-------------------------------Why Hasson and Wong?-----------------------

Why would a guy from Kentucky travel to the other end of the North America to get his procedure done? I really wish I didn’t have to travel this far, I wish I could get in my car and drive two hours, but I don’t think that the hair transplant community is at that point yet. I’m not going to get in "the which doctor is best?" argument, but I think there is room for vast improvement from a lot of clinics in the industry.

Side Note:
It was a strange experience to tell my mom and dad that "I’m traveling thousands of miles, out of the country no less, to let someone that both of you have never heard of cut on my head, and did I mention that I would be paying him thousands of dollars to do so". Just not something you say to your parents everyday, but after I explain why, they where in total agreement.

Now back to the reason I chose H&W. I mean damn, this is my head and if I’m going to let someone cut and paste on it I’m going to what I consider to be the best option in the world. Why would I cut corners on a plane ticket, or a day off work when I am investing so much into the situation? Money is the obvious investment, but more importantly and a bigger investment in my opinion—MY SELF ESTEEM. Why anyone would let travel/money effect their decision is beyond me—If those two have to be a factor, then my advise is your not ready/prepared, so wait. You need to understand, and I have told my self this; once you take the plunge you are in it for the long haul.

Also, I’m not saying you have to choose Hasson and Wong, I am just saying choose your Michael Jordan and settle for nothing less. Choose the Doctor that when the game is on the line, they have proven they can perform…………….. Again this is your head!!!!!!

In a nutshell why I came to the conclusion that Hasson and Wong was the clear cut choice for me.

1. Track Record. Everyone that I talked with on e-mail and websites had nothing but good things to say about them and their success rate. Results are what I want—Period. Hasson and Wong have consistently produced Results.

2. Large session (mega session). With my degree of baldness I would need a large amount of graphs and I saw no reason in having 3 or 4 procedures to accomplish what I could in 1 or 2 with H & W. For someone with my degree of hair loss I feel this is a huge plus for them.

3. Their willingness to talk to me. They answered every e-mail and returned every phone call. Not once did I feel like they were tired of talking to me, or upset that I asked a question that to them was probably common knowledge.

4. A willingness to turn people away. This may or may not sound crazy, but the fact that they are willing to actually tell people that getting the procedure done would be a mistake for them showed me it wasn’t all about money.

--------------------------------Trip Report---------------------------

How it all went down………..

Monday/Tuesday

Me and my wife decided to make the trip together. We like to travel and add the fact that I was having surgery it was a no brainer for us. It would give a chance to check out Vancouver, somewhere that honestly we probably would have never thought about going to had it not been for me wanting Hasson and Wong to do my procedure.

It started with an early wake-up (3 a.m.) to travel to the airport. We decided to leave early and steal another day in Vancouver. As we traveled on the road to the airport we discussed the surgery again. This was something we had done multiply times, but it was reassurance to my wife and honestly me. We talked about the journey that led me to 1) Having the procedure and 2) the choice of Hasson and Wong.

Side note: I don’t often fly United Airlines, but had a great flight to Chicago and even a better flight to Vancouver (Lucky enough to get exit row seating). Always been a loyal Delta guy, but may have to start reconsidering it. I found way more leg room on both flights than I had had with Delta the last few times. The same could be said for the return flight home.

Side note 2: Met Joe Montana in Chicago……. Honest to God—JOE MONTANA! He had is son with him—Scooter. Scooter will be attending Notre Dame next year for you sports fans out there. They were grabbing a bite to eat at the same place we were and after a double take I was like dang—Joe Montana. My wife scored us an autograph, but we kept it low key as he seemed to want to avoid an autograph session.

We touched down in Vancouver around 11:00 A.M. local time. We caught a cab to the hotel (Sheraton Wall Centre). The room was nice and the location was perfect for sight seeing and shopping. The people that worked there were nice as well. They were very helpful with things to check out and areas to go. We had done our own fair share of research (trip advisor) and felt like we had a good game plan for the two days before the surgery. I won’t bore you w/ lengthy details but would like to briefly discuss a few things to do…..

Monday

Seawall-Great walk to see the mountains and see.

Robson Street-Nice shopping for the wife and wide/great selection of food!

Tuesday

Stanley Park-Biked around Stanley Park and have to say that it was outstanding! Love the views and scenery. I highly recommend it!

Granville Street-Check out the Public Market! They have a huge variety of foods from across the world. Really cool.

Road the sea bus back just to say we did.

--------------------------Pre-Op with Wong/Dr. Wong--------------------------

Went in on Tuesday and met w/ Dr. Wong. Very nice experience as we discuss hairline, estimate on graphs, and a few other questions that I had. It was nice to take the wife so she could meet Dr. Wong and ask a few questions of her own. He looked and my donor density and skin laxity—He thought both were great! Excited to say the least at this point. He asked me if I had done the scalp exercises and said that it was a direct result of the great laxity. He estimated in the neighbor hood of 5,500 graphs.

Dr. Wong is an extremely nice gentleman! He’s down to earth and showed extreme care in my procedure and a genuine concern for my comfort. As you will read below my surgery was lengthy and he constantly made sure I was filling no pain. He also offered numerous breaks when I became stiff and uncomfortable from the extended time in the chair.

----------------------------The Surgery------------------------------

Donor Size 37 x 1.8

1 Hair #’s 1319
2 Hair #’s 4591
3/4 Hair #’s 1155
Total Graphs 7065

Got up at 5:30 and headed to Doctor Wong’s office. A word of advice to future patients—Don’t leave too early as it will only take 5 minutes that early in morning. Also, if you come that early you will have to take the elevator behind the building. It’s inside the first gate on the left (took me a minute to find it).

Went in and met w/ a technician first. We went over the basics (Had I followed pre-op instructions, allergies, and what was in store for the day). Doctor Wong came in short afterwards and prepared my hairline and took pre-op pictures.

He again checked my laxity and density as I sat down to get started……..

The numbing process was basically painless for me--A very slight bee sting, but pretty much nothing. Once I was numb Dr. Wong began to cut the donor area. I really thought that it would be a lot more painful that it turned out to be. We got a huge section and he had no trouble with the stitching and stapling. This did take some time, because he was being careful to not hurt existing donor hairs—greatly appreciated. He again talked to me about the success of my scalp exercises and how it 1) let him take a larger amount of graph 2) Made it much easier in the stitching/stapling and 3) would help me in the healing process.

After the donor area was removed and sent off with the girls to harvest Dr. Wong began with the slits in the top of my scalp. I really liked the fact that Dr. Wong would explain to me what was going and why he was doing certain things—I had done my research, so I had a good idea, but it was very reassuring to have him walk me thru it. He also discussed what the technicians were doing with the graphs, etc.

I would like to take moment and tell you what a great job the Tech’s did as well. They were very easy to talk with, willing to take breaks at any point and time, and constantly checking on my comfort level throughout their planting of the graphs. It was an extremely long night and they put my transplant and comfort first! Thanks!

At this point and time we are about 8 hours into the surgery. Dr. Wong then came back in to give a graph count…………. 7,053! I didn’t know how to react…….. I was so excited and knew that it would give a chance at great coverage! We discussed the high number and the fact that it would allow us to hit the crown and add more density to the front 2/3’s…….. He was extremely excited for me and filled me in that I was in rare company (7,000 graph club!) That number still amazes me………

I have to say that it was a loooooooooooong day for me and I’m sure for the tech’s and Dr. Wong, again they were so attentive and kind throughout the process. They made sure that I had ample breaks to stretch, eat, use the restroom, etc. In total I spend 16 hours in the office……. By the end of the procedure I felt like I had been in a boxing match. In all honesty my head wasn’t that sore (somewhat, but not bad), it was my neck and back that were causing me problems. The long period of time in the chair took its toll on me by days end.

Headed back to the hotel about 9:00ish and had some pizza with the wife and filled her in on all the details. I was so sore that I just sat there in a 16 hour, 7,000 graph daze. I had a rough night trying to sleep. With the amount of graphs that I had I was worried about laying on them, etc. I only got about 4 hours sleep and felt sore, sore, sore…….. In hindsight I should have taken the sleeping pills (I would advise you to do so!) Dr. Wong gave me some Tylenol 3’s that helped as well, but it was a rough night.

The next morning I went in for my first wash. It felt great to have the water running over my head and get my staple area cleaned (Near 100 staples). Again the tech was very helpful and answered some question. Dr. Wong checked the area and discussed care, medication, and a few other odds and ends.

So as most of you would expect I am extremely excited about the procedure, and hope to have a great recovery……… Hope that I didn’t bore you with too much detail.

------------------------------H & W STAFF---------------------------

Joe took me and the wife out to eat sushi on Tuesday and we had a blast! He answered so many questions for us, he offered advice on things that we hadn’t thought about, and genuinely took an interest in my procedure. Great night and really appreciated it. He also checked in on my 3 or 4 times to make sure I was doing well and/or if I needed anything. I really have a lot of respect for this guy as he was one of the first to start the blogs, etc. That was a huge step and an invaluable tool for guys like me. Big Thanks Joe! Great guy!

Christina is extremely nice as well. She’s always got a smile on her face and throughout the months leading up to my surgery she was invaluable for me. Answered every phone call and e-mail. Thanks Christina!

Doug was someone I had only spoke w/ a few time, but he took a bunch of pictures for me and also came in 2 or 3 times to see if I needed anything.

Didn’t get to meet Mike in person, but really appreciate the phone calls leading up to the procedure. He did call from Seattle during the surgery and congratulated me on the great number. He was the first person that I talked to at length from H&W and really helped me with the process. Thanks Mike!

All the techs were extremely friendly and professional! They work extremely hard and are the unsung hero’s in the process. Hope the Luvely (SP) got to catch the end of American idol. Thanks Girls!

Doctor Wong was the perfect fit for me. Obviously the fact that he got me 7,000 graphs was great, but he’s very kind hearted and put me first during the entire process. He could very easily be less attentive, less understanding, and less down to earth with all the procedures he’s done and the results he’s produced, but he’s not. He’s top-notch in every regard!!!!!!!! Thanks Doctor Wong!

SCALP EXERCISES

I really feel that if I hadn’t been religious with my scalp exercises I would have not gotten the great number that I did. I started them about 2 to 2 ½ months be for the procedure. I did them at least 6 days out of the week for 30 minutes a day. I will tell you that I learned to hate them, but the pain of doing them was well worth results they helped produce.

Many of you remember my feelings about the first procedure
that I underwent a year ago. It
wasn’t a terrible job but there were some issues; average yield, slight
cobble-stoning, 2’s in the hairline, and very low density. I couldn’t go out in public without
caking the dermmatch and toppik on.

Well, this past Wednesday I underwent my second procedure
with Dr. Paul Shapiro for 2,348 grafts and I could not be more pleased. Here’s the story.

At about 7:30 AM, I met with Dr. Paul to discuss a strategy
for the procedure. There were a
few things to address. One was how
to deal with the bumps / cobblestoning in my recipient region. Dr. Paul grabbed Dr. Ron to get a look
and they both agreed it’d be best to do a number of punch-outs, especially
removing the 2 haired grafts in my hairline. They also thought that the added density from this procedure
should disguise the rest of the bumps.
One interesting thing is that Dr. Paul noticed a few bumps in my
recipient region that were not producing any hair.

The next issue was what to do with the scar from my first
surgery. I have been happy with
how the scar turned out, but apparently it was taken fairly high. The Shapiro Bro’s agreed that it would
be better to leave the original scar alone for now and extract a new one below
it. My first strip was taken so
high that it might’ve had a negative effect on the net yield. So the bad news of the day was that I’d
be left with two scars. If my
crown continues to bald further where my first scar begins to show, I’ll have
to undergo a FUE procedure to disguise it. But it was certainly reassuring to have two world class docs
agree on what would be the best approach for me.

Now onto the surgery.
It lasted from about 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. I know many surgeons leave the graft placement to many of
the techs and I have no problem with that. But Dr. Paul didn’t just say “see ya” after the donor
removal. He was there for much of
the graft placement, placing many of the grafts himself. The technicians at SMG were outstanding,
friendly, and professional throughout the entire day, even with a tornado watch
going on! The guy on the weather
channel actually said, “We are just really happy that no one is ok.” LOL

I did shave for the procedure and I look pretty damn funny right
now. I’m hoping for a quick
recovery as I’m starting a new job in about 20 days and I can’t wear a
hat. But after a disappointing
first procedure, I was willing to do whatever necessary to make it easier on
the SMG crew to do what they do best.

I’ll be posting some pictures and hair counts from the
surgery for you once I receive them.
Much thanks to everyone at SMG with special shout outs to Jason
(B-Spot), Janna, Matt, Pam, Dr. Ron and especially Dr. Paul. This looks to be a first-rate job and I
can’t wait to see the results. You
all were more accommodating than I can say and I won’t forget it.

Now the let the growing begin. J

I started shedding hair at the age of 18. My father is completely bald on top, so I knew there was a good chance the same thing would happen to me eventually. After many months of research, I decided to go forward with a hair transplant at the age of 24. I chose Dr. Wong (from Hasson & Wong) because of their consistently good reviews worldwide. My procedure was on September 1st, 2009.

I had always had a lot of hair then about the age of 30, I started noticing my scalp, but the thinning process was very slow. By the time I hit 37-38, my crown started to show and my right temple receded back about 1.5" within 9 months but the other temple stayed put --- odd enough. Had first procedure with Dr. Boles at Nuhart. He only opted for 800 grafts. Why so low? Good question. He left me with a scar on back that my next 2 HT docs said wasn't horrible, but about 1/8-1/4" thick. The good news was that neither could tell Dr Boles grafts from the natural. He put about 600+ around my entire crown (again, not much) and the remaining grafts in my temple that had receded so much. By the time I went to Dr #2 (Keene), she said it looked like Dr Boles gave me about 5 grafts per sq/cm. What the crap (WTC)?

Though no work was done on my left temple, it receded back but only about 3/4". My whole frontal area continued to thin. So about 8-9 months later, I went to Dr. Keene. She gave me 2000 grafts - 1500 to begin the restoration of my hairline/frontal area and put the remainer in my crown where I had a small area of exposed scalp. By month 4-5 I kind of freaked out (in a good way) to see my hairline sort of coming back, though my right temple was still back further than I wanted.

Having moved to Nashville and being almost 11 months out, i wanted to shoot for one more (hopefully last HT) and opted for Dr. Panine. He gave me 2600 grafts - 2000 to fully restore (at least that's the plan) my hairline and give more density to my frontal area. The other 600 placed on the left side of my crown to cover up the thinned area -- these 600 should finish covering all my crown.

I'm waiting for pics to post. But that's the history so far :)

I began noticing some recession of the
frontal hairline at age 19. The loss was fairly fast by age 21 I
was almost NW3a. At that time I started using Minox (5%) and
proscar at 1.25mg, and had some response, but no re-growth it only stopped
my shedding and hair loss. So I kept taking Minox and proscar until I was age
24. Then I decided to get my 1st HT with Dr. Rassman of NHI in California. The
total transplanted graphs were 1100 micros which only gave me a very light and sparse
hair line. So, the years went by and I’ve had no further hair loss ( I
reacted well with fina and minox).

Then on May 26th of last year at age
37 I finally decided to take the plunge and do another hair
transplant procedure. At that time I went with Dr. Marcelo Pitchon from Brazil.
I don't know what happened but for my disappointment I’ve had absolutely no
growth and as matter of fact even 14 months after the HT it’s still hard to
believe that not a single hair grew. I
assumed that Dr. Pitchon used a very poor technique. It was indeed a very traumatic experience.

So, after my 2nd
HT I was left with much less hair in the top of my head and a ½ an inch wide scar in the back . It
just became obvious that I needed a 3rd procedure to repair and
actually achieve what that 2nd procedure was supposed to do. That is when
I started to research online (hairlosshelp.com) and saw some of the amazing results that Dr. Hasson
had achieved with the lateral slit technique and dense packing. So, I
researched a little more but still had some doubts , that’s when I decided to
call Hasson and Wong and spoke with Joe aka Jotronic and he suggested that I
send some pictures so Dr. Hasson could evaluate … Then, after a day Joe called
me back and we talked about my concerns and past traumatic experiences , we had
a couple of laughs on the phone and he explained what Dr. Hasson suggested , I’ve
felt no pressure from him and any one from Dr. Hasson’s clinic and that was
very encouraging . The next morning I called then and arranged my 3rd HT procedure
confident and full of hopes ….

I started losing my hair in the back in my mid 20's. i started noticing the receding hairline shortly after that. i started using rogaine and propecia. The propecia probably worked but the rogaine was failing to return the hair in the crown. i made the decision when i was about 27 to shave my head bald. i had mixed reviews from people i knew but i happened to like it. i enjoyed the freedom of not having to use rogaine twice a day and paying for propecia each month. i definitely stood out from others which is cool and some girls, not all girls..but some of them really love shaved heads. i joined the military in 2006 and fit right in with my short haircut though when i tried growing it out at one point i started getting comments such as old man river and other jokes related to my bald spot. i have rather thick skin but i got tired of hearing it. Recently i started to realize that i need to make a choice. i am 31 years old and am relatively young still. i needed to decide whether i was going to shave my head for the rest of my life or take a chance and do whatever i could to have hair again. i decided to get a hairtransplant and commit to taking propecia every day. On December 12, 2008 i went in and had the procedure done. i will post pics often so that others can use my experience to help make their own decisions as i did before i had mine. Good luck to those of you who arent sure what to do. Take care.

I lost most of my hair over the course of a year - when I was 23. It sucked. A lot. I'm a very public person and it hurt my confidence in so many ways - something I'm sure a lot of guys can relate to. Luckily, I was able to halt the hair loss with Rogaine, which I used for about 8 years (and stopped), and Propecia, which I've used for about 11. That has halted my loss. I waited a long, long time, before I decided to get a hair transplant.

I have ALWAYS been conscious of my hairloss...Both Grandfathers on mothers and fathers sides were bald, and my father as well...

Despite using products such as "The Helsinki Formula" and other creams, lotions and shampoos since about age 18 or 19, I noticed the beginnings of true hairloss around age 25... I continued to use the most to date hairloss remedies I could (i.e. Rogaine, Minoxidil) and managed to stave-off my hairloss another few years, but it was a rapidly losing battle... By my mid 30's it was TRULY a problem that I was more or less obsessed with on a daily basis... I did EVERYTHING I COULD (sprays, concealers, special haircuts, etc.) to hide, conceal, and avoid the problem, but, of course, it was ALWAYS there....

This was not only personally devastating (as it is for ANYONE experiencing it...) but also PROFESSIONALLY damaging, as I am an actor, and often roles and parts depend on youth and physicality... I had lost my confidence--not only with the opposite sex, but auditioning for my career as well... I KNEW I had to do something about my hairloss!

Began to lose my hair at the age of 25, at the same time as my twin brother, Gemini2 (also listed on this site). As I got older and lost more, it affected both my confidence with the opposite sex, and my versatility and hireability as an actor. For the past 5-6 years, I have not felt like myself when I looked in the mirror. I finally decided I could not ignore it any longer, and began to research the options. Minoxidil was unsuccessful, and a hair system did not feel like a natural enough option for my lifestyle. Surgery seemed the only realistic treatment to feel like myself again. With my twin brother, I began to research surgeons, and across the internet, we found Dr. Hasson and Wong's patients to have the most impressive results and the highest personal satisfaction, time and again. We were especially impressed with the website's high-definition videos, which zoomed in on the recreated hairlines to show just how natural they looked, up close and personal. We finally determined to have the surgery done by Dr. Hasson (on the same day!), in mid-September 2009.

I had a huge amount of very dense hair until the age of 16 or 17, then it started to fall out at an alarming rate. By the age of 22 I was approaching NW3, although the rate at which my hair was being lost had decreased a lot. Since then it's just been a very gradual decline.
