| My Hair Loss Story. |
I probably first noticed my hairline receding around 19 or 20. I was devastated since it was the eighties and I had some pretty cool, super-long heavy metal hair. I was sure I'd be a cue ball by age 25. Fortunately for me, while I quickly developed a mature hairline that I was very self conscious about, the rest of my hair remained thick and no one could tell since it was so long. About the age of 25 I cut my hair short and it still looked great. It hung in there pretty well through the rest of my twenties and early thirties and I was pretty happy with it until about 35 when I started losing most of my front third and my crown thinned a bit. I had been buzzing it down pretty tight for the past few years since there was not too much I could do with it anymore. At the age of 40, I decided to take control of my hair loss and got my first HT. |
| How has my hair loss affected me? |
I tried to resign myself to being "the bald guy" but I just couldn't. There are lots of guys out there who look great bald. I'm not one of them. I'd say I experienced a great loss of confidence when I realized that I no longer had enough hair to style and ended up having to buzz it down. I hated seeing photos of myself because the image I saw just didn't match the one in my head. My first HT changed all of that for me! It also motivated me to lose 30 pounds this past year. Now when I look in the mirror, I see the old me staring back and you know what? I missed him!
Now I'm embarking on HT journey #2 in order to refine what I got the first time around. If you are considering restoring your hair, take the first step and see a qualified doctor. It's not for everyone but it may be the right thing for you. |
| What hair loss treatments have worked best for me? |
I believe that I have seen positive results in my crown since beginning generic finasteride and generic minoxidil. I can't say for sure which one of the drugs is responsible or if both are working for me but I plan to keep using them. |
| Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results? |
My first HT resulted in a very natural hairline and my scar healed very nicely. Unfortunately, I didn't get the density that I'd hoped for and I also felt that the hairline was too high. As I write this, I am two days past my second HT. My hairline has been lowered and the thin areas filled in. I've got a very positive feeling about this one and I believe that, when it grows out, it will provide the results I'm looking for. |
| What hair loss treatments would I recommend? |
finasteride (Propecia or 1/4 Proscar)
minoxidil (Rogaine)
In their generic forms these drugs cost me a total of about $8.00 per month. Well worth the insurance in my opinion. |
| How has hair restoration surgery changed my life? |
Since undergoing my first HT (even with the less than perfect density) I have felt more confident and comfortable in my appearance. I actually have "good hair days" again and have even gotten compliments on my hair from people who had no idea what I'd done. This was definitely the right decision for me. Now I'm fine tuning it with HT #2. |
| My general advice and suggestions. |
If you suspect hair loss, don't wait! Find a qualified and competent doctor (preferably one from the Coalition) and get evaluated. Don't be afraid to try meds. If you experience side effects you can always stop.
Research, research, research!!!! Your donor grafts are a precious and nonrenewable resource. Don't entrust them to a bargain-basement hack! |
