Are Females with Diffuse Hair Loss Good Candidates for Hair Transplant Surgery? - 1/27/2009 3:01:26 AM

Question:
I am a 60 year old woman with diffuse thinning hair on the top of my crown and beyond. I have a strong family history of hair loss and had a hysterectomy at age 39. I live in a city with many specialists. Since my balding pattern extends beyond the top of my crown and is diffuse, will I be a good candidate for hair transplantation? Or will other areas below my crown eventually thin also?
Answer:
We strongly recommend all women with hair loss to consult with a dermatologist to determine its cause. A dermatologist can also look for signs of miniaturization not yet visible to the naked eye.
If your hair loss is caused by non-genetic factors, in many cases, balding can be reversed by treating the condition. If your diffuse hair loss hasn't extended to the sides and back of your scalp, you may be a good candidate for a hair transplant.
