24 Year Old Male Still Experiencing Hair Loss on Propecia for 6 Months - Can I get a Hair Transplant Now?

3/20/2008 11:36:25 PM

Question:

I'm 24 years old, and I started to notice my severe hair loss last year. I know I'd probably get it from my grandfather, who went bald at age 27. Too bad I didn't get my dad's hair gene, because he still has a full head of hair at age 55. I have been using Propecia for about 6 months, but I still notice a great amount of hair loss daily. This is really depressing at my age. I'm thinking about getting a hair transplant, but since I'm not fully bald, am I eligible for hair restoration surgery?

Answer:

From personal experience, I know how upsetting balding can be at an early age.  Getting on Propecia (finasteride) as you have was definitely a good idea.  Though many hair loss patients start noticing hair loss trailing off after 6 months after using Propecia, it's a good idea to use it for at least a year before making a final evaluation.  You might also want to chart your progress by taking monthly pictures of your hair loss in order to see if its getting worse, remaining the same, or improving at all.  You might also want to consider adding Rogaine Foam (minoxidil) into your hair loss solution regime which will increase the likelihood of regrowing hair. Hair transplantation can be performed on patients who are not fully bald and may be an option for you in the future. For now however, it's important first to give the hair loss treatment medication a chance to properly work.
