4 Important Tips for Selecting a Hair Transplant Clinic

1/15/2008 11:01:37 AM

Hair loss sufferers seeking hair transplant surgery as a means to restore their hair are faced with a difficult challenge, selecting a quality hair transplant clinic. Balding men and women just beginning their research often believe that every hair transplant physician performs quality work and is out for their best interest. This is a logical conclusion, after all, they are doctors right?

But sadly, the hair transplant industry is not medically regulated and many hair replacement surgeons still use outdated techniques that may leave a hair transplant patient looking worse than before surgery.

Below are 4 important tips to consider when selecting a hair restoration physician.

  1. Make an Informed Descision Based on Research and Knowledge: Hair loss can be very emotional. In the midst of feeling insecure about the way we look, we often have a tendency to make quick emotional decisions rather than rational thought out ones. You are encouraged however to take your time to research hair restoration and make educated and informed decisions based on knowledge and experience rather than gut and emotion. The internet is a powerful tool and when used wisely, can be one of the best sources of information that you can find and use to your advantage.

  2. Ask Your Hair Loss and Hair Transplant Questions on our hair restoration forum. No question is a stupid question. Conversation about a particular topic will not only increase your education but will facilitate learning to all members and guests who are too afraid to ask the same question.

  3. Consistent Evidence of Quality Hair Transplant Patient Results: Select a hair transplant surgeon that is researchable and where evidence is clear that the hair transplant surgeon performs quality work. In order to be comfortable with a hair transplant surgeon's work, look at a number of patient posted online hair transplant photos on our hair restoration forum.

  4. Meet with Real Hair Transplant Patients: Hair transplant pictures are helpful, but meeting patients of a surgeon you are considering is even better. Consider asking a hair transplant doctor for a list of patients in the area you can call and meet up with. You may also find local hair transplant patients of a certain physician on our hair restoration discussion forum.

In your research, you are encouraged to be careful of marketing tactics that are obvious to some and not to others. Marketing tactics include:

  • Hair transplant patient posted experiences using over generalizations on very specific items.

  • Over-use of glowing positive words like “natural”, “easy”, “satisfaction” and “guaranteed”, with no specific surgical details such as date of the surgery, number of grafts/hairs transplanted, or hair transplant photos.

  • Before/After hair transplant photos that are small or blurry, taken from different angles, lighting, or surroundings. To learn more about how lighting can impact photography, see the following Hair Loss Q&A Blog: Is it possible to receive a full head of hair with hair transplant surgery?

At the Hair Transplant Network, we have done some of the research for you by pre-screening hair transplant surgeons. Only hair transplant physicians who perform state of the art hair transplantation are recommended at the Hair Transplant Network. An elite group of surgeons who perform ultra refined follicular unit hair transplantation are invited into the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians.

This elite group of surgeons is a great place to start your research. You are however, encouraged to research any physician you are considering for hair transplant surgery.

In my opinion, it is a good idea to consult with at least THREE hair transplant surgeons you feel comfortable with after doing extensive research. Once you narrowed down your search to a few top hair restoration clinics, selecting a physician becomes quite subjective. Choose the hair transplant clinic that you feel suits you best. Our hair restoration forums are a HUGE benefit because the posts come from REAL hair transplant patients posting REAL results. In my opinion, there is nothing better than following a patient's progress who is posting regular monthly updates. That way, you know that what you see is what you get.
