Dr John Frank, MD attributes his fine technical skills and manual dexterity to his success as a Super Bowl winning Tight End with the San Francisco 49ers and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He specializes in high quality FUT and FUE with natural results.

Why Dr. Frank is recommended.

Dr. John Frank has over 15 years of experience and performs high quality FUT and FUE hair transplantation as the primary part of his practice at his own clinic in New York City, NY.  He has the staff and experience to perform large sessions exceeding 2500 grafts and dense packing up to 50 follicular units per square centimeter (FU/cm2) when appropriate for the patient.  He now only operates on one patient per day and does most of the primary consultations himself.

After being accepted to several medical schools, Dr. Frank was drafted by the San Francisco Forty Niners (49ers) of the National Football league which carried him through two Super Bowl championships. While this was the peak of John's athletic career, his ultimate goal was to pursue facial plastic surgery and surgical hair restoration. Despite substantial offers to play additional football, Dr. Frank decided to return to the rigors of full-time medical student and completed his medical degree in 1992.

Dr. Frank received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and along with the world famous neck surgeon Dr. David Schuller, co-authored several research papers focusing on pediatric infections.

Dr. Frank has a strong background in facial plastic surgery and Otolaryngology (study of ear, nose and throat diseases) and had an opportunity to perform various cosmetic procedures including surgical hair restoration while working with Dr. Sheldon Kabaker in Oakland California. In 2007, he opened his own hair transplant center, Anapelli Hair Clinic in midtown Manhattan.

Dr. Frank now specializes in high quality follicular unit hair transplantation including FUT via strip harvesting, FUE (follicular unit extraction), scar revisions, plug removal, general hair transplant repair, eyebrow transplantation and beard restoration. He also provides free consultations for hair transplantation and medical treatments for hair loss.

Dr. Frank makes tiny recipient incisions as small as .7mm and dense packs up to 50 FU/cm2 when appropriate for the patient. He uses a single blade to harvest the donor strip during FUT to minimize transection to the follicles and uses the trichophytic closure technique when appropriate to minimize the appearance of the donor scar. Dr. Frank prefers sutures over staples and often uses a 3.0 Nylon running stitch. If the donor area is wide, undermining was performed or the patient has excess laxity, Dr. Frank prefers uses several 3.0 Vicryl interrupted subcutaneous sutures.

Dr. John Frank performs high quality FUE using a combination of Dr. Harris' Powered SAFE scribe and manual punches depending on transection rates during extraction. Punch sizes range between .8mm and 1.0mm depending on the size of the graft and the patient's overall physiological characteristics.

Dr. Frank is a proponent of both FUT and FUE and feels that they both provide certain advantages and disadvantages to patients. In his opinion, FUE benefits patients who are convinced through research or fear of the linear scar associated with FUT/strip surgery and only want FUE, patients who want (or are only able) to wear their donor hair cropped extremely short and patients who've had multiple FUT procedures who want to avoid the risk of additional unnecessary scarring. He also feels that FUE provides physicians with the ability to select single follicular units when necessary, which eliminates the need to split larger FUs into singles for the critical hairline areas.

Dr. Frank feels that FUE is limited to patients who require a lesser amount of grafts and isn't optimal for patients with unfavorable skin/hair quality for FUE, which may result in poor yield.

Dr. Frank is a member of the ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and is a board certified diplomate of the ABHRS (American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery). He is also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology (for head and neck surgery), the American Board of Otolaryngology and is an assistant clinicsl professor of Otolaryngology at Columbia University.
