This patient initially chose strip surgery to address hair loss resulting from androgenic alopecia. However, the failure of his first surgery to produce the expected growth results caused a chain of additional repair procedures. These subsequent surgeries were also performed using the strip technique.
Like many individuals needing successful repair, this gentleman faced the Catch 22 of not having enough donor follicles left on his scalp to achieve significant improvement. Therefore, his situation grew more hopeless after each of these operations.
New Hope With Body Hair Follicles
The patient learned about Dr. Umar’s work in hair transplant repair, including individuals who had been able to achieve full coverage, even under worse conditions. These results were made possible through the ability to remove body hair follicles as additional donor resources.
Due to strong need for larger donor supplies among patients with severe hair loss and repair situations, Dr. Umar worked to design a new form of FUE punch technology known as UGraft. It includes special mechanics and features which safely remove follicles growing at sharp angles or producing hair emerging at unpredictable growth trajectories. This specialized engineering enabled large volumes of body hair to be removed so that they can then serve as viable hair transplant grafts.
This patient wanted to restore normal coverage and be able to move on with his life. Therefore, he decided to undergo yet another surgery, only this time using a combined donor pool of head and beard hair.
To achieve this patient’s goals, Dr. Umar removed 11,000 grafts.
- 9500 were inserted to cover the areas of depleted hair on the head
- 1500 were applied to conceal the strip scarring
Besides the safe harvesting of body hair, UGraft also creates wound cavities with a special shape. When the skin heals, extraneous tissue around the edges of the wounds are drawn beneath the skin’s surface. This minimizes the appearance of noticeable raised scars.
Furthermore, Dr. Umar made sure to remove beard hair follicles by selecting them diffusely across the chin and neck. Growth of stubble or a fuller beard would therefore not reveal large patches of missing hair.
Despite the extent of his hair loss, the patient was able to recover an aggressive hairline along with natural looking temples to complement the final hair contour around the face. This was due to the additional grafts made possible in the donor pool through the extraction of beard hair.
