2700 grafts - 4400 total hairs - Had surgery on June 10, 2008. The orignal goal was for 3,000 grafts but during the surgery Doctor Dorin told me that my scalp was too tight in the back and he felt that trying to go for more might compromise how fine the scar would be at the donor area. He made a professional judgement call to reduce the size of the donor strip for that reason. I am happy with his decision.
I wore a hairpiece for 15 years then stopped about a year ago and have been using Propecia and Rogaine for 12 months. Right now I plan to continue using the medications but will not wear a hairpiece again regardless of the surgical outcome. Although I felt the hairpiece was done well I was never happy with the amount of work required to keep it looking nice. I was also always bothered by the limitations it placed on being active in sports, swiimming etc. It was cosmetically acceptable but very inconvenient and difficult to keep it looking that way.
My Hair Loss Story
Had thinning hair and a receeding hairline for most of my adult life. I started wearing a hairpiece at around age 42. I stopped wearing the hairpiece about a year prior to deciding to get a transplant, mostly to see how much hair I would regrow, The tape from the hairpiece pulled out whatever hair I actually had, so I wasn't sure how much would come back after I stopped wearing it. I also started using Rogain and Propecia at about the same time. The first picture is what my head looked like after a year of no hairpiece and using Rogaine and Propecia for the same 12 months.
