Procedure #1 August 2016 - 5,518 FUE grafts on the front/mid portion of my scalp on August 15 and 16, 2016 at ASMED in Istanbul with Dr. Koray Erdogan. Had restarted 1.25 mg daily of proscar per doctor's instructions approximately 1 month prior to surgery and have stayed on 1.25 mg proscar daily since with no side effects.
Procedure #2 July 2017 - 2,600 grafts again with Dr. Erdogan to fill in gaps/crown/add density.
Procedure #3 - Third procedure is scheduled for March 1, 2019 for 2,000 grafts to fill in crown/vertex/mid-scalp by Dr. Baubac Hayatdavoudi of Alvi Armani clinic in Beverly Hills.
I am currently contemplating whether to use only head hair as donor, or do mixture of head and beard hair and preserve some of the remaining head donor area. Remaining donor estimated somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 head grafts. I have ample available beard hair on the neck to use, should I so choose. My profile for Procedure #3 has my beard donor photos.
Proscar 1.25 mg every day. I do not use Minoxidil per Dr. Erdogan's instructions, but will likely start again after Procedure #3. Am happy with results from hair transplants and proscar, and looking forward to third procedure of 2,000 grafts to focus on thinner crown area.
My Hair Loss Story
Had a thick head of hair in my youth, first noticed hair loss at around 19. Used minoxidil and propecia for many years with uncertain results until quitting all treatment and continuing to lose, resigning to fact that hair transplant or buzzing hair was inevitable.
How has my hair loss affected me?
Starting to lose hair around 19. Wore hats and tried to keep my hair short (sometimes even shaved with no guard), bleaching it, or styled it in order to try to hide it. However, I followed the developments in treatment and transplants, and knew if I stayed patient and waited until I had a better idea of how much hair I was going to use, and saved enough money for advanced FUE procedure(s) which would leave no long scar that I would one day have appearance of a full head of hair again, especially if willing to keep it short.
What hair loss treatments have worked best for me?
Tough to say how effective minoxidil and proscar are because it's just too hard to say what they did or did not do. Dutasteride gave me noticeable side effects when I tried it so I stopped that. I do not get proscar 1.25 mg daily side effects, so I just take my pill each day and hope it is working. Finally, Dermmatch concealer worked fairly well for a last couple years before first transplant to create illusion of hair with a receding hairline....better than looking bald, however it's a pain, leaves marks everywhere (including pillow cases, your own and on any you stay on while at someone else's house). Nothing compares to the hair transplant which for me was the only permanent option with real results and would recommend to all who need to actually regrow significant hair, as long as they plan for future loss and research and select the right doctor(s). Plan on multiple procedures in you lifetime.
Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results?
So far, my two hair transplants have lived up to every bit of my expectations, and I cannot wait for session #3 with 2,000 more grafts (10,118 grafts total) to hopefully fill out the vertex and minor touch ups so that I finally no longer have to worry about any part of my hair.
What hair loss treatments would I recommend?
FUE hair transplant with a top notch surgeon. I can only speak about my own experience with Dr. Koray Erdogan so far. FUT may be good for some, but for the results, price for going to Istanbul for mega-sessions, ability to wear my hair short without a long scar and the overall experience, it was a 10/10.
How has hair restoration surgery changed my life?
I no longer think that I am losing hair in the front or mid-scalp, but instead each day it just gets better and better. I have a great hairline now that fits my face very well.
My general advice and suggestions.
Do your research. If you can be patient enough to see where your hair loss is going to progress to, especially, if you start losing early, try to hold off as long as you can until you can afford a mega session(s) with a top notch doctor. At the same time, I wish I had done this a couple years sooner, although for me I needed to wait until I had the money, time and right time in my life to do it. I couldn't be happier after two procedures of 8,118 grafts, with a third procedure for 2,000 grafts scheduled for March 2019 with Dr. Baubac Hayatdavoudi of the Alvi Armani clinic in Los Angeles!
