Around 30 years old: 300-500 grafts in front hairline (Bosley)

42 years old: 2500 grafts in front (Dr. Scott Alexander)

Non-Surgical Treatments:

I have been using Rogaine pretty much since it came on the market. And I have been using some form of Finasteride for approximately 10+ years.

My Hair Loss Story

My hair started thinning and my hairline receding when I was 19.  I began using Rogaine in my late 20's and had a pretty good response, and then added Propecia a few years later.  Between the two I had quite a bit of good regrowth on the top of my head, but my hairline continued to recede.  I had my first hair transplant with Bosley at around age 30 (only a few hundred grafts.)  I also began wearing a hair system from Hair Club at this point with the plan that I would continue getting transplants as I could afford it and then remove the system.

I got rid of the hair system a few years later (without having any more surgery) because I was having such a good response to Rogaine and Propecia and I felt my hairline was passable at that point.

After I turned 40 my hairline began to recede further until the only hair that was left was from my earlier transplant.  I decided then to go in for another transplant session and selected Dr. Scott Alexander as my doctor.

How has my hair loss affected me?

I've always felt I looked older than I really am.  I'm envious of guys who can just take a shower and throw some gel in their hair. As my hair continued to thin I had to spend more and more time trying to get it to lay just right.  I was pretty successful at it, because most people told me they didn't know why I needed a hair transplant.  But my morning routine was getting old fast, and forget about swimming or sports.

What hair loss treatments have worked best for me?

I had a very good response to Propecia.  My hair system (Hair Club) never looked right and people could easily tell that it wasn't real.  I just had my transplant with Dr. Alexander and so far I am thrilled with the results.  I can already tell the density is going to be fantastic.

Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results?

My Bosley transplant was so-so. I certainly didn't have the terrible experiences that I've read about some people having. Most Dr.'s have told me the results were pretty good, even though it was a small amount of grafts.  My transplant with Dr. Alexander was fantastic.  It went very smoothly, he explained everything he was going to do and his staff was very friendly and made me feel very comfortable.  I had some pretty extensive swelling in my face several days after surgery, so I would definitely recommend taking at least a full two weeks off work.

What hair loss treatments would I recommend?

Hair transplants are the only real solution. Everything else is a band-aid!  I will continue to use Rogaine and Propecia to keep what I have gained in the top.

How has hair restoration surgery changed my life?

A little too early to tell, but I will give you an update shortly.  I think it's going to be awesome!

My general advice and suggestions.

Pick your Dr. very carefully. Travel if you have to, don't just pick a local Dr. because they are close.  Have a good plan for how you will transition back into work/life after surgery.  You will have at least several weeks where your scalp may attract some stares.  Having a plan before hand will make the time after your surgery less stressful.
