Dr. Shapiro

Age: 38 | Bald Class: Bald Class 3 Email Me

I went in for a 1578 FUE hairline transplant with Dr. Paul Shapiro on May 9th and May 10th of 2011. There were about 1200 grafts inserted to build my hairline back out and an additional 300 or so were placed behind the frontal core behind the center of my hairline to reinforce the thinning area and act as a preventative measure.

Non-Surgical Treatments:

I've been taking Propecia (1mg) about three and a half years and will start taking Biotin, MSM, Zinc. Additionally I plan on starting to use Rogaine foam when I recover enough here from the surgery. I use Nioxin for my shampoo and have used Nizoral sparingly. I also take a daily multi-vitamin, Vitamin D (not everyday) and Fish Oil (daily) but I don't really consider this as part of my hair loss regimen.

My Hair Loss Story

I first started noticing a receding hairline around seventeen and it gradually progressed through college years at which time it began to bother me more and more. I think I was in denial for the first few years about it while in I was my early twenties but then when I was around twenty four I started taking Propecia which definitely stabilized my hair loss. I also experienced some grew back frontal, center portion of hairline.

How has my hair loss affected me?

Too be honest, it's never really effected my social life or dating situation at all unless I allowed it to but I suppose it has effected me more personally in the sense that when I style my hair every morning it's something that has consistently bothered me for the past decade and I'd be self-conscious about it if I got my hair cut too short. I'd get comments here and there from close friends or colleagues about losing my hair who knew me well but it was nothing extreme.

What hair loss treatments have worked best for me?

Propecia has easily been observed to work the best my slowing my hair loss and regrowing a small amount of hair surprisingly in the front. I used generic Minoxidil for awhile that I purchased abroad and it seemed to help a little but the application was too much for me to keep up with. I also tried Saw Palmetto and scalp exercises but didn't think this had any sort of effect

Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results?

The design of my hairline is exceptional as was the experience. It's extremely early but I am very optimistic with regard to my results.

What hair loss treatments would I recommend?

I would definitely recommend taking Propecia and embarking on a preventative routine if you are experiencing hair loss. I waited a number of years in my late teens and early twenties as I was in denial of my receding hairline. I took Propecia for several years and considered my family history of hair loss before recently embarking on my hair transplant journey.

How has hair restoration surgery changed my life?

Too be determined but I am sure it undoubtedly will deeply on a personal level. I am very optimistic.

My general advice and suggestions.

There are options out there and I think many people are not informed on the newer technology in the industry. I am a pretty thorough and anxious person and went through the whole 'am I really going to do a HT' thinking this was such an extreme option associated with a lot of societal stigma. If anyone needs any advice or would like to know about my experience I'm always happy to talk on the phone or via email. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I'm sure other members in the forum woul feel the same as well.
