Bald Class: Bald Class 3v Email Me

I underwent a hair transplant with Dr. Robert Haber in December of 2009.  We had agreed upon a transplant of 2,500 grafts, though we ended up extracting far more than that number accidentally.  I am awaiting the full breakdown of my graft numbers, but I'm estimating approximately 3,200 grafts.

Non-Surgical Treatments:

Minoxidil 2x daily

My Hair Loss Story

I had a helmet of hair for my entire childhood.  I was even nicknamed Senor Pelo (Mr. Hair) in high school.  But at around age 19 I started thinning, and around my 24th birthday I finally realized how much hair I had lost.  My crown was thin to the point that my scalp showed through.  The front portion of my hair was so thin that I could barely style it anymore.  I knew it was time to take steps to alleviate these issues.  I began supplementing with Minoxidil, with very positive results.  But the front of my hair was still noticeably thin, and I ultimately decided to get a hair transplant.  I was concerned that because I am still only 25 years old, I would be turned away at my consultation, but Dr. Haber agreed to work on it.

How has my hair loss affected me?

I used to be defined by my hair in my younger days.  I used to spend upwards of an hour every day creating the perfect look before school.  Losing my hair ruined my confidence and completely changed the physical appearance I was used to having.  I stopped talking to girls, and I just felt like a different person.  Life was not very happy.  Only 2 days since my transplant, and I already feel great about the decision.

What hair loss treatments have worked best for me?

Minoxidil has had very positive (albeit limited) effects on my hair density.  My transplant is only 2 days old, but I'm hoping it will have a great effect as well.

Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results?

I have not had enough time to see my results, but I was extremely satisfied with the experience at Dr. Haber's clinic.  He and his staff were friendly, personable, professional, and efficient.  Nobody tried to force sales on me or push me into any decisions.  It is clear that Dr. Haber knows exactly what he is doing, and I'm confident the results of my transplant will reflect this. I already have zero pain in my donor area, minimal itching, and no swelling or discoloration.

What hair loss treatments would I recommend?

Definitely try non surgical treatments first.  Nioxin was a dead end, but Minoxidil definitely increased my hair density.  If you have the fiscal means, and the restoration of your hair is worth the cost, a hair transplant is a plunge worth taking.

My general advice and suggestions.

Definitely set up consultations with multiple doctors.  I was lucky that the first consultation I scheduled ended up being the best.  Not everyone is so lucky.  Fully research each doctor.  Call the Better Business Bureau.  Consult with prior patients.  Don't just trust a slick sales pitch or flashy advertisement.  Credentials can be shady in this business, but there are markers that go a long way in establishing a doctor's qualifications.  Publications in medical journals, years of experience, evidence of having travelled to conferences and given lectures, etc.  Also check with multiple doctors about their opinions of colleagues.  They may not be willing to discredit their colleagues, but they shouldn't shy away from praising a highly qualified one.  You only have a finite amount of donor hair.  Make it count.
