My Hair Loss Story

Started when I was 21 years old, first year of dental school.  Progressed to NW6 in 15 years.  At 23 I tried Rogaine, but didn't like the way it made my hair feel.  At the time I said I'd rather be bald than use this stuff - boy was that a stupid decision.  My wife and I struggled with infertility, so my hair was not my top priority.  I had so many other good things going on, I just figured having hair was at the bottom of the list of things to do.  I'm finally at a point in my life (fourth kid on the way Feb. 10th), that it was time to take care of me.  I'm a cosmetic dentist and talk to people every day about how improving their smile has a tremendous affect on my patient's lives.  They spend thousands of dollars with me pursuing the smile they always dreamed of.  I constantly tell them that a persons smile comes from the heart, but having pearly whites doesn't hurt.  So here I was, faced with the possibility of regaining the hair I sorley missed.  I could finally afford it and really had no reason not to do it.  I have realistic expectations, but plan on getting approximately 7500 grafts over 3 procedures.  Do I worship my hair or the thought of having hair - no.  Will it make me feel good to be able to comb and style my hair - yes. Will it make me feel good that patients won't ask to see the bald dentist when they come to my office? - ABSOLUTELY.

How has my hair loss affected me?

Self conscious about it. I think it's one of the first thing people notice.  I don't want that to be a characteristic people use to descibe me to others.

What hair loss treatments have worked best for me?

Too early to tell, but I assume it will be the hair transplant.

Am I happy with my hair transplant experience and the results?

I am very happy with the experience, result forth coming.  I have realistic expectations.

What hair loss treatments would I recommend?

I'm comfortable with my surgical and non-surgical regimen so far.  The vitamins may be overkill. They may just produce expensive urine, but it can't hurt.

How has hair restoration surgery changed my life?

It's nice to do something to better myself without feeling guilt.

My general advice and suggestions.

Don't wait too long to at least get a consultation with a highly respected surgeon.  He/she may not even suggest surgery, but at least you can have a short and long term plan.  Remember - hair is like money - you don't need it to be happy, but it sure makes things easier.
