Can I Donate My Scalp Hair to My Son for Hair Transplant Surgery?

8/29/2011 2:23:32 AM

Question:

My son has had Alopecia now for 5 years and his hair has not grown back since. I would like to know if I can donate my hair to him for hair restoration surgery.

Answer:

I’m very sorry to hear about your son’s condition. Unfortunately, transplanting hair from one individual to the bald scalp of another, while technically possible, would require the lifetime use of the same potent and potentially harmful anti-rejection drugs that any organ recipient would need. As hair loss is not a life-threatening condition, this option is not available to hair transplant patients.
