Can I Get a Hair Transplant While I'm Still Losing Hair?

8/13/2008 12:10:04 PM

Question:

I have a hair loss problem that is still at a very early stage. But obviously over a couple of years the problem would become more apparent and increasingly difficult to hide. So what options do I have? Should I let my hair loss continue and then proceed with hair transplant surgery or can I have a hair transplant while I am still losing hair? What can be done to prevent future hair loss?

Answer:

Catching hair loss in the beginning stages is an optimal time to begin treating it. Non-surgical hair loss solutions such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil) work best for those with only minimal thinning hair. Determining hair transplant candidacy is determined by considering a number of factors. A quality and ethical decision will work with you to discuss and meet your long term hair restoration goals.

In my opinion, consider getting on Propecia and Rogaine which may help slow down or stop hair loss. Together, they may strengthen miniaturizing hair and stimulate hair regrowth. After one year of use, if you are a good responder to these hair loss solutions, you may find hair transplant surgery is no longer needed. At the least, if these medications can stabilize your male pattern baldness, the chance you will need subsequent hair transplant surgeries in the future will lessen. Proceeding with hair transplant surgery without medication while hair loss continues may be an option, but isn't optimal since male pattern baldness is unpredictable and progressive.
