Does Hair Transplant Surgery have Side Effects?

6/2/2010 10:41:02 AM

I would like to go for hair transplant surgery, but I am so confused. Will my hair grow or not? I would like to know if there are any adverse side effects after the procedure.

Along with all the possible benefits, every surgical procedure has limitations and risks associated with it. The same goes for hair transplant surgery. While 95% or more of surgical hair restoration procedures are successful under the care of the best hair surgeons, there is a chance of less than optimal growth. Additionally, all surgical procedures produce some kind of scar and hair transplant surgery is no exception. In most cases, the donor scarring is minimal and easily concealed by your existing hair on the sides and back of your head even at short lengths. However, you'll have to rule out shaving your head unless you don't mind revealing the linear scar produced by follicular unit transplantation (FUT) also known as strip surgery. There is also a small chance of scar stretching which would then make it more difficult to conceal with your existing hair. Follicular unit excision (formerly known as follicular unit extraction) (FUE) hair transplant surgery comes without a linear scar, but produces tiny, round scars where hair follicles are removed individually. While FUE comes with its own set of challenges and disadvantages, the primary advantage of this procedure under a skilled physician's care is that scarring is virtually undetectable even when shaved down extremely short.

I recommend researching our community to learn all about the benefits, limitations, and possible risks of hair transplant surgery and the best physicians that perform the procedure before undergoing surgery.
