Does Medical Insurance Cover a Hair Transplant Procedure if Hair Loss is Causing Psychological Illness?

4/13/2009 11:27:53 AM

Question:

Is it possible to have medical insurance cover a hair transplant procedure in the event of an extreme, psychological problem with baldness? I have Medicare and Cigna Network.

Answer:

Generally speaking, surgical hair restoration surgery is not covered by insurance. But in your case, assuming it can be proven and determined by a licensed psychologist that you have a psychological illness or disorder due to hair loss, I’m honestly not sure. It can't hurt to consult with a doctor and check with your insurance company.  However, at best, I'd suspect your insurance company may help cover counseling fees.
