How Long after a Hair Transplant Should I Wait to Smoke and Drink Alcohol?

11/20/2010 1:52:54 AM

Question:

I had hair transplant surgery done about a month ago with Dr. Pathomvanich in Thailand. I found him through the Hair Transplant Network site. I have heard that you can usually continue drinking and smoking about 2 weeks after hair restoration surgery. My lifestyle is such that I usually indulge in heavy drinking and moderate smoking about once a week. I have been sober for a month after surgery. Now, after a month, can I continue my old lifestyle or should forget about doing this?

Answer:

While smoking may delay healing after a surgical procedure, it is not known to affect hair regrowth. Alcohol acts as an anticoagulant and should be avoided pre-op and during the healing phase.

Since you are well beyond the 10 to 14 days that it takes for the transplanted hairs to become fixed in place, you should be fine to begin smoking and drinking again. However, I highly recommend consulting with Dr. Pathomvanich and/or your general practitioner for their advice.
