How many hairs can I get transplanted with surgical hair restoration?

How many follicular units (hair groupings as they occur naturally) can be harvested during hair transplant surgery ultimately depends on your donor hair supply, available and "safe" hair on the sides and back of your scalp resistant to DHT. For follicular unit hair transplantation (FUT) also known as the “strip” procedure, this includes your scalp’s elasticity, donor hair density, and the width and length of the strip harvested from your donor area. In follicular unit excision (formerly known as follicular unit extraction) (FUE) hair transplant procedures, hair characteristics and density play a primary role in how many follicular units can be extracted and transplanted.

Depending on the area of immediately and future baldness needed to cover; it may take more than one procedure to meet your hair restoration goals. On average, a patient has been 5000 to 8000 follicular units available via FUT and 3000 to 5000 follicular units available via FUE. To maximize your donor hair supply, a combination of both procedures is often utilized.
