Question:
When you get a hair transplant, part of the process is that transplanted hair falls out in a period of one month. My question is, when the transplanted hair regrows, is it going to fall out again? How long does it last?
Answer:
It is believed that transplanted hair follicles shed due to
the trauma and temporary interruption in blood flow they sustain during hair
restoration surgery. However, this process only happens once. Typically,
between three and four months after hair transplant surgery, new hair growth
will begin and these follicles will continue to grow just as your natural hair
did previously.
In addition to the natural shedding of transplanted hairs,
patients may also experience shock loss of the surrounding hair causing them to
appear balder than they were prior to surgery. In most cases, this shock loss
is temporary. Many hair loss experts believe that starting a regimen of Rogaine
(minoxidil) and Propecia
(finasteride) a few weeks prior to surgery may help to reduce the
likelihood of shock loss.
