How Soon after Hair Transplant Surgery Can I Shave My Head?

1/12/2011 12:16:04 AM

Question:

I shaved my recipient area just 19 days after hair transplant surgery and I noticed that hair came out at the root with the razor. Have I damaged my transplanted hair?

Answer:

In general, follicular unit grafts are securely anchored and protected below the scalp by ten days after hair transplant surgery. While I would not have recommended shaving your recipient area bald at only 19 days post-op, given that you have not mentioned any associated bleeding, I feel confident that you have not done any permanent damage to the grafts.

It is normal for the transplanted hair follicles to shed from the grafts after surgery. You should begin to see hair growth by the 4 month.

The best policy in situations like this is to contact your hair restoration surgeon for his or her advice. I also recommend visiting our Hair Restoration Forum and social network for more information..
