If I Shave My Head After a Hair Transplant Will I See Spotty Scars on the Back of My Head?

Question:

I am thinking of having hair transplant surgery. I understand that there will be a slight scar from removing the donor hair however if I shave my head a year after surgery will I see spotty scars on the back of my head that screams "hair transplant"? Or will that area look natural?

Answer:

I can't tell by your email if you are considering undergoing follicular unit hair transplantation or follicular unit excision (formerly known as follicular unit extraction). These two distinct hair transplant techniques are similar in that hair is taken from the donor area and transplanted into recipient sites made in the balding areas. The difference in these techniques is how hair is removed from the donor area.

In follicular unit hair transplant surgery, a physician will remove a strip of tissue containing hair follicles approximately from ear to ear. The wound is then closed using sutures or staples which are typically removed within ten days. At best, this results in a thin linear scar easily masked by surrounding hair. Your scar has a greater chance of becoming visible the shorter you wear your hair in the back and sides.

Follicular unit excision (FUE) is often attractive to prospective patients because of the lack of linear scar. It's often a bit easier to camouflage the scarring with shorter haircuts because hair follicles are removed one by one in various locations instead of linearly. Shaving your head too closely may result in the spotty like scars you are referring to, but usually only after too much donor hair is depleted or larger extraction tools are used.

There are a number of advantages and limitations to each type of hair transplant technique. I encourage you to spend more time researching them and consult with a first-rate hair transplant surgeon to learn more.
