Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Causing My Hair Loss?

8/21/2010 1:30:15 AM

Question:

I am 47 years old and have been on Hormone Replacement Therapy for about three months now using injectable Testosterone Cypionate under a doctor's care. Since starting, I have noticed significant thinning of my hair for about the last month and a half. I have researched the situation and have found that it is the result of the buildup of DHT caused by the Testosterone. I need to know what drug that I need to use to block the DHT and will my hair return afterwards. I have a full head of hair and have no male pattern baldness on either side of my family. Thank You.

Answer:

You are probably correct in your assumption that Testosterone Cypionate  is responsible for your recent hair loss. This is an anabolic steroid that is often used by bodybuilders to increase mass and strength. However, it also carries with it the risk of some rather undesirable side effects such as; hair loss, gynecomastia (male breast development), testicle shrinkage and fat gain just to name a few.

I recommend that you consult with your physician about starting Propecia (finasteride). Propecia is the only DHT blocking medication clinically proven and FDA approved for treating hair loss and should not interfere with your hormone therapy.

Some men also use Avodart (dutasteride) but it is not currently FDA approved for treating hair loss and your physician may not prescribe it for this purpose.
