My Doctor Says I'm Not a Candidate for Hair Transplant Surgery

8/6/2010 2:56:49 AM

Question:

I recently had a consultation with a hair restoration physician recommended by the Hair Transplant Network who informed me that I did not have adequate donor hair for a successful hair transplant surgery. I was so shocked I did not even question him on my options. Are some surgeons too conservative in selecting candidates? Since it is in his best financial interest to perform a procedure should I just live with his opinion and move on?

Answer:

The hair restoration physicians recommended on the Hair Transplant Network are among the best in the world. However, I don't recommend giving up after only one consultation. I recommend you consult with at least two more recommended physicians. If they all have the same opinion then I’d suggest resigning yourself to the fact that you are not a hair transplant candidate and move on. If one is willing to do surgery on you then I’d continue to get a couple more opinions until you feel that you fully understand the pros and cons of choosing surgery.

Are you currently using Rogaine (minoxidil) and or Propecia (finasteride)? While neither of these medications is known for restoring hair to the hairline, they may slow the progression of your balding as well as adding density over the entire head.
