About

Started losing hair at 16.  it bothered me tremendously before i found propecia at 18 which filled things in a little and stabilized my loss.  but now propecia is starting to lose its effictiveness just a little and i wanted an HT to fill in my temples. i dabbled wtih rogaine, which i will restart in ernest after the HT, and a bunch of other vitamins, supplements and laser therapy.  i understand hairloss is a lifelong issue and it will require contant management until i am too old to care anymore

My Surgical Treatments to Date

FUT with Dr. Path in March 2013

1995 grafts

1 hair: 218

2 hairs: 981

3-4 hairs: 796

Total Hairs: 4966

Density was around 45 grafts per cm2 in near the hairline and closer to 40 in the back.  The couple spots on the sides only got about 50 grafts each.

My Non Surgical Treatments

propecia/proscar for 9 years

minoxidil on and off but not for the past 3 years

laser comb for 1 year

biotin for 5 years

nizoral for 8 years

Bald Class

Bald class 3

Norwood class 3

The earliest stage of male hair loss. It is characterized by a deepening temporal recession.

propecia without a doubt saved me from being totally bald already.  i have not had any real side effects

just happened a couple days ago but the doctor and staff were great and the hairline looks fantastic. i do worry that they didnt put enough density in.  i have about 40 grafts/cm and i wanted closer to 50 but the doctor didnt think it necessary.  if its not enough then i can go back for another proecture

get on propecia for atleast 3-5 years before thinking about an HT

Procedure 1

9 Months 9 months is supposed to be the month where the most significant growth has been achieved.  If that is the case I am tremendously happy with the near final results. The most important thing is that I no longer look balding. I can brush back my hair and reveal a great hairline with confidence. The transplanted areas are not as dense as the native areas but they are better than some surgeons led me to believe they would be. A few lessons I have learned which I would like to share: - Don't freak out about post-op care too much. I worried about everything. If I went out in the sun for 15 minutes without a hat several weeks after the transplant I thought I lost grafts. If I used a hot hair dryer a few weeks later I thought I lost grafts. I freaked out about pimples. The list goes on. Listen to your doctor's instructions but beyond that don't obsess too much. - Get this procedure done early if you are a younger guy like me but also combine it with preventative measures. Hair loss is a life long battle but with finasteride, minoxidil and nizoral shampoo I feel I will maintain the rest of my native hair for a long time. Now with the trainsplant I feel I will be looking good for the rest of my youth. - Dr. Path is incredible. His staff is quick to answer questions and are very comforting. Also the procedure was a lot cheaper with him than it would have been almost anywhere else. Last but not least, the results are fantastic. Sorry for the low quality photos.  I will get some better ones for my next post.

Procedure 1

6 Months Finally reached the 6 month milestone.  I am extremely happy with the way things have progressed.  Only a few months ago people were commenting that I was balding and had a receding hairline.  Now I am getting compliments on my full head of hair.   The thickness is not all the way there.  It does blend into native hair very well but if you hold back my native hair you can see the transplanted hair is a lot thinner.  I hope the thickness increases a lot over the next 6 months.  Even if the thickness only increases a little, I will still consider my HT one of the best decisions of my life.

Procedure 1

4 Months Slight improvement from month 3 to 4.  Still looks thin but I know its early.  I can't wait for month 6-7 when I can start styling my hair however I want.  Trying my best not to be impatient.  Atleast the redness is all gone.

Procedure 1

3 months It begins!  About 2 weeks ago I noticed the first signs of growth.  It is not much yet but where there used to be bald patches of white scalp there is now dark hair.  I can't wait to see it thicken more.  The pimples have finally calmed down.  I popped them like Dr. Path said I should.  Hopefully they didnt cause any permanent damage and don't come back.  So far everything seems to be going according to plan.

Procedure 1

6 Weeks No major changes in the past 2 weeks.  I am starting to lift weights again which feels good.  Getting a lot of pimples but Dr. P says its a good sign of activity under the skin.  I am still redder than I would like. Hopefully in another month I can see some hairs sprouting.

Procedure 1

4 Weeks Things are going well.  Had a good amount of shedding of the transplanted hairs in the past 2 weeks.  I was hoping the redness would be totally gone but no luck so far.  The redness is diminishing slowly and I use aloe a few times a day.  I finally got back into the gym today and took it really easy.   I do worry about my donor scar.  I know its still healing but it looks pretty red right now.  The doctor told me my scalp was exceptionally loose so I am in danger of having a big scar.  It wont bother me too much since I intend to keep my hair long at all times but who wants a big scar anywhere on their body?

Procedure 1

Immediate Post Op Procedure was as comfortable as it could be.  I listened to music while I drifted in and out of sleep.  The first injection on the back hurt a little but after that I could only feel numbness as they gave me what felt like another 100 injections.

Procedure 1

2 weeks The past week flew by.  All the scabs came off around days 9-10.  The dissolvable stitches are starting to come out of the donor area as well  Now I just have a bright pink scalp and what feels like a week old beard on my recipient site.  I am looking forward to the transplanted hairs shedding and the redness subsiding a little so I can resume my normal social life.

Procedure 1

Day 5 Got my nylon stitches out today.  They said 5 days was enough time.  My donor site feels much more comfortable now that they are gone.  Another 3-4 weesk before the dissovable stitiches are gone.  No other change except that the scabs on the grafts are a lot darker.   I still have to wear a black headband to stop swelling until the 1 week mark.  I think that has been the most annoying thing so far.

Procedure 1

Day 2 day 1 was pretty awful.  i threw up at night becuase of antibiotics and/or painkillers and the donor area throbbed a lot.  thankfully day 2 is much better.  i just shampooed my hair with johnsons baby shampoo.  these pictures are just out of the shower. dr. path's team took post op pics that they will send soon and will post them once they do.   sorry that these pics are not so good as they were taken with my cellphone cam i would love to hear any comments and reassurance.

Procedure 1

Consultation day Dr. Path and team helped me pick out my hairline which i did not want to be too aggressive.  The doctor also showed me that the rest of my hair is starting some diffuse thinning!  You can see this mostly in my widows peak/forelock.  I am going to start minoxidil ASAP after the HT to stabilize this for as long as I can.   They estimated i had 40 cm2 of area to fill in and would try to go for between 40 and 50 grafts per cm2. My donor density was very good.  However the extreme looseness of my scap gives me a greater risk for a wide donor scar.  i am not too worried about the scar since i never plan to wear my hair short.  but i hope its not too big.
