Proscar Verses Propecia

10/26/2007 8:45:37 AM

Many people have been asking whether or not Propecia (one of the two FDA approved medications for hair loss) can be substituted for Proscar .

Proscar and Propecia contain the same active ingredient called finasteride that helps to inhibit Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The only difference between these two medications is the dosage measured in miligrams (mg). Proscar contains 5mg of finasteride whereas Propecia contains 1mg of finasteride.

But why switch?

The answer is simple: price. Proscar is a lot less expensive than Propecia and when taken properly - it's the same medication.

Hair loss sufferers therefore, can therefore substitute Propecia for Proscar by doing the following:

  • Obtain a prescription from their general practioner or hair resotration physician for Proscar
  • The Proscar pills must be cut into quarters (using a pill splitter would be the easiest way to do this)

Because Proscar is not listed as a treatment for hair loss, some general practioners may refuse to write a prescription for it as a hair loss treatment. Understand that finasteride is not evenly distributed throughout the Proscar pill, which ultimately means some days you may be taking more finasteride than others.

It is also my understanding from what Iíve read, that no additional side effects or shedding should occur when switching from Propecia to Proscar. I have however, recently read of a hair loss suffererís report of some side effects and shedding when switching. Whether or not itís related, I canít be sure.

Many first-rate hair restoration physicians condone the use of Proscar as a treatment for hair loss and is certainly a way to save money.
