Use Rogaine (Minoxidil) on a Non-Balding Scalp to Prevent Hair Loss?

5/9/2012 1:38:01 AM

Question:

I have a problem with hair fall from the entire scalp. Please let me know the effect of minoxidil on normal hair. I don't have any sign of baldness.

Answer:

It’s quite normal to lose between 100 and 150 hairs per day. If you are not experiencing thinning hair and have no history of hair loss in your family, you may not need to use medical hair loss treatments. However, if you choose to start Rogaine (minoxidil) as a precaution, there is no risk to normal non-balding hair.

In other words, hair that is not genetically vulnerable to the effects of androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) will not become dependent on Rogaine.
