Washing Scalp Vigorously 11 Days after a Hair Transplant

8/3/2010 1:42:07 AM

Question:

On the 11th day after my hair transplant surgery, I vigorously washed my hair and got every scab off. After that, I felt as if my scalp was hurting for about 2 days. Is there a possibility that I dislodged a hair graft at 11 days post-op? Most of the scabs were just hanging and dangling off the hair at the time of the washing. I know that I should consult with my surgeon but he is out of town.

Answer:

In my opinion, your grafts should be fine. Some hair transplant physicians suggest beginning to gently remove scabs as early as seven days after hair transplant surgery. Most agree that after 10 days the follicular unit grafts are firmly anchored and well protected below the scalp.

Since you did not mention drawing blood I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. I suggest you try to stay calm and arrange to consult with your physician when he returns.
