Will I Need More Than One Hair Transplant?

11/2/2010 4:09:04 AM

Question:

I have a few questions about hair transplants. Will the procedure restore full hair in one session? Are there any side effects? Is the hair permanent? Can hair be transplanted from my body to my scalp? Thank you.

Answer:

Today’s ultra-refined follicular unit transplantation provides some patients who are qualified with the option of having mega-sessions of over 3,000 grafts in a single procedure. This can sometimes provide “full” coverage and reasonable density over a large balding area.

The procedure is done in a single day although many patients will choose to undergo a second or even third procedure before reaching their hair restoration goals. As with any surgery, side effects are pain, swelling and risk of infection.

Hair transplanted from the permanent donor area should continue to grow for a lifetime.

Some doctors do perform body hair transplants but the results are inconsistent in comparison to scalp hair transplantation.
